biographies

 

Kate Richards is a Sydney-based media artist with an undergraduate degree in BA Communications from UTS (1980), and a Masters in Fine Art in New Media Research from the University of NSW (CoFA) 1st class honours in 1996. Kate works across multimedia, interactivity, visualisation software and time-based media and is exhibiting artworks both nationally and internationally. Recent multimedia exhibitions include the Life After Wartime suite with Ross Gibson, the most recent outcome being the 5 channel interactive media installation Bystander (funded by the Australian Research Council and The Nelson Meers Foundation) exhibited at The Performance Space@Carriage Works in August 2007 plus other CDROMS, live performance and a print exhibition exhibited since 1999; Wayfarer, a live game space performed at The Performance Space@Carriage Works in September 2007(funded by the InterArts and Theatre Board Australia Council); The Uncertainty Principle, a photographic exhibition at the Australian Centre for Photography in Oct 2007.

 

Sarah Waterson is a new media artist, designer and senior lecturer in interactive design, whose work deals with the influence of electronic technologies on subjectivities and how design as a discipline can inform practice and inter-disciplinary collaboration/s. Over the past twenty years she has exhibited interactive environments nationally and internationally. Recent interactive installations have included: 33ºsouth - a three-channel audio-visual installation that juxtaposes the cities of Sydney (Australia) and Santiago (Chile) using a custom made data mapping system and database (collaboration with Juan Francisco Salazar), trope, a new writing project developed for the Second Life environment (Sydney Writer’s Festival 08), subscapePROOF, a custom made data mapping system (collaboration with Kate Richards, Australian Centre for the Moving Image 04/05), and subscapeBALTIC (collaboration with Kate Richards, ISEA2004). Her recent publications include: Play _Space; Conceptualizing Interactive Media for Community Participation. PLACE: Local Knowledge and New Media Practice, Cambridge Scholars Press, 2008. Book Chapter in collaboration with Dr Juan Francisco Salazar.
Her current interests include data mapping techniques and embodied media.

Waterson is the Associate Head of School (Academic), School of Communication Arts, University of Western Sydney, Australia.
